The Supreme Court ruled that a 2017 law increasing bankruptcy fees in 48 states but exempting debtors in Alabama and North Carolina violated the Constitution's Bankruptcy Clause. The Court found that Congress cannot treat identical debtors differently based on artificial distinctions it created.
